“By words one transmits thoughts to another, by means of art, one transmits feelings” by Leo Tolstoy.

During the 1980s, the opening up of the society directly influenced the area of science, literature and art.  In the area of art especially, during the period, artists in China explored and experimented with many art movements. And through the New Art Trend of 85, artists in the 90s displayed most dramatic changed in mentality and style, from focuses of grand narratives to a more personal and emotional point of views.  Art as emotional communicative tools became more apparent; art works displayed individual consciousness and everyday story.

During the 90s art scene, Pang Maokun started his transition from Rural Realisms to urban sceneries.   Left behind the classical idealism to a more personal surroundings: interior views, everyday life and women in their daily states.  Spiritually, the works were quiet with classical elegance, which moved away from the earlier Scar Movement and Rural Realism.  He was more focused on the studies of traditional oil painting techniques.  Pang’s delicate and exquisite realist techniques captured the moment of these simple and pure figures. The figures, with hints of haziness and sadness, showed subdued classical beauties. At the same time, those figures were distanced and refreshing.  It is as the critic He Guiyan stated Pang Maokun simplified the background contents and tried his best to solidify the figures, which captured the emotional state of one particular moment, and at the same time, constructed the pictures with calmness and solemness.
